The advent of new digital imaging techniques has led to an explosion of research into the visual system of the blind mole rat, Cryptomys hottentotus. The purpose of this study was to examine the visual system of the blind mole rat by using modern optical imaging and immunohistochemistry. In the eye, retinal cells are distributed evenly in the retina and are arranged into three major zones, i.e., the outer nuclear layer (ONL), outer plexiform layer (OPL), and inner plexiform layer (IPL). The OPL and IPL contain the neurons of the optic nerve and the inner plexiform layer contains the synapses between the photoreceptor cells of the rod and the other neurons in the retina. It was found that in both the inner retina and the retina, the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are located in a band directly underneath the OPL.
