Physiology is the study of the function of the body's organ systems and of the mechanism of action of drugs, hormones, and other agents that affect function. Physiology is one of the six subdisciplines of the medical specialties of medicine. Physiology is included on the list of specialties on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 examination. This is the seventh edition of a descriptive review of physiology presented in subdiscipline chapters. As a descriptive review of physiology, the book meets this goal, but it provides few explanations of processes and does not mimic true high-yield USMLE Step 1 prep tools. The book is written exclusively for year 1 and 2 medical students. It meets the needs of students trying to crosscheck their fund of knowledge in physiology, but it is less useful as an explanatory book of physiological processes.

The book provides a brief history of the physiological concepts that are presented. The history of physiological concepts is presented in a way that is much like an outline, but the sections are not numbered, and the outline format is not followed. Rather than a numbered outline, the author has added page headers to groups of terms or concepts to indicate their sequential appearance. The history of physiology concepts is presented in a brief way, which means that it reads quickly and provides a cursory understanding of physiology history.

The book has 7 chapters: Introduction, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Nervous System, Urinary System, and Hematological System. All chapters start with a brief history of the physiology field, followed by a description of the structure and function of the various organ systems and a discussion of the basic concepts of physiology.
