The Ultrasonic Sensor uses Ultrasonic waves to determine the distance of an object like Bats, hence it can be used as a distance measuring sensor. There are two Ultrasonic Transducers present in which one acts as a Transmitter which transmits a high frequency Ultrasonic signal and other acts as a receiver which will wait for the receiving of echo signal which gets reflected by any object in its path. The time between the two signals when divider by speed of sound gives us the distance of the object. Theoretically the sensor claims to have a measuring distance of 2cm to 400cm. However, a range up to 75-80cm can be easily achieved practically. They are cheap, easy to interface and require low power to operate. They can be used to measure the depth of water as waves can travel in water, detect and avoid obstacles in the path of a robot and also as a parking assist sensor.
This module is powered by 5V supply. To start the measurement the trigger pin has to be made high for 10usec and then turned off. This will make the transmitter to send an Ultrasonic wave of frequency 40HZ. Echo pin goes high for a period of time which will be equal to the time taken for the Ultrasonic wave to return back to the sensor.
The amount of time the Echo pin remains high is measured by the controller and the distance traveled by the wave is calculated by multiplying with the speed of sound and hence the distance of the object from the sensor is measured by halving the distance traveled by the wave.
The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor is used to detect the distance of an object between 2-400cm with an accuracy of up to 3mm. It is based on the SONAR principle and hence its working is not affected by sunlight or other ambient lighting conditions making it ideal for outdoor applications also. The sensor works by transmitting a signal and starting a timer simultaneously, it then stops the timer when the receiver receives the signal after bouncing back from the object.

I saw a comment on a similar blog post that suggested a better choice of sensor would be the RCWL-1601, which is drop-in identical to the HC-SR04. A quick inquiry to Mr. Google suggests that the price and availability are about the same.
I power the ultrasonic with 5v for more stable operation but connect the echo pin to the ESP via a level shifter as this is an output pin from the ultrasonic module and does output 5v which is too high for the 3v3 ESP module.A 1k0 and 2k2 resistor in series works for me.
In all schematics the sensor is powered by 5V (!) and the trig-pin and the echo-pin are connected directly (!) to GPIO-pins, even though the voltage of the IO-pins of ESP32 (WROOM) must not exceed 3.3V. How is that possible
Hello all,I have been playing with this recently and enjoying it.I added something useful, which is specifying a timeout in the pulsein command.That allows one to limit the sensing distance as it then returns a distance of 0 if the echo was not received before the timeout.The makes the sensor easier to implement when doing object detection and needing to ignore background objects, by effectively specifying the sensing range with a time limit for the maximum distance it should receive an echo from.Kind regards,South Africa
