Since the remake has been announced, there has been a lot of talk about ghost hunters and paranormal research. While this makes sense for the movie, given that it takes place in the modern day, it also creates this issue. If the movie goes into detail about how ghosthunters have explored this area, it will feel a lot like a documentary about ghost hunting. Which we don't need.

A movie about a woman who is stalked and murdered by a serial killer would be different, but once we start discussing the paranormal, you will be trapped into discussing ghosts and hauntings. I would rather see the remake focus on those who do research and debunk ghost stories, rather than on those who work in or deal with the supernatural. If this film makes one point, it's that there are real people who work with ghosts, so we don't need to focus on the supernatural as a villain. For example, the character of John Wayne Gacy could be a serial killer who does not believe in the supernatural. This would make him a very different villain from previous incarnations of the character.
