One day, Simon is told by a strange man, the mirror-image of Victorin, who is called Silas, that his father has died, and that he is now a rich baron. Simon, who is on the edge of Paris and a world of poverty and degradation, is enthralled by this revelation.
The novel's plot is simple, and well-worn. The main characters are a young barber, named Simon, who is on the edge of the city, and his friend and confidant Victorin who lives in the suburbs, and who is in love with his uncle's daughter, who lives in the suburbs with her mother, though she is being courted by a friend of Victorin.
The story focuses on two families and two people close to them. The family lives on the edge of Paris. The father works as an antiquarian, but has no real income. His wife, an aspiring painter, runs a small drapery shop. The Paris of the novel is an important place, but only in the way that it exists in many cities, like New York or London: a place of bustling streets and of a very odd mix of people living in a city which is itself like a raucous village.
