The New World of Darkness is more closely linked to the cinematic stories and worlds of the video games, and as such, always takes place within a unique timeline. The World of Darkness timeline is centered on a number of 'boxes', each representing a specific year starting with 1889. The boxes are parallel universes with some shared elements but with some key differences. Players can switch between universes and the timeline at will.

The timeline is a reflection of the current state of the world. For example, in the New World of Darkness version of 2007, vampires are rare and are regarded with terror by the majority of people. In the New World of Darkness version of 2044, vampires have become common and the fae are considered feared and disliked. In the New World of Darkness, the Kindred were once a loose collection of supernatural creatures like the Devil and its minions. Over the years, the Kindred grew into its current form, and because of the nature of the timeline, the Kindred are linked to certain Pantheons in different boxes. In the New World of Darkness, the Kindred are based on the four classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Which Pantheon they belong to can be determined by the character's bloodline. For example, a bloodline based on the Elemental Fire has commonalities with the Fire Kindred, and a bloodline based on the Elemental Water has commonalities with the Water Kindred.

Within the New World of Darkness, there are three main pantheons: the Kindred, the Devil, and the Bats. The Kindred are a group of supernatural creatures who are generally good and are linked to the elements of Nature, like Nature spirits or elemental entities. The Devil is a group of supernatural creatures linked to Evil, and consists of demons, succubi, vampires, and other demons who are generally bad. The Bats are a group of supernatural creatures linked to the spirit of fear, as they are generally frightened of other creatures. The Kindred and Devil are aligned to specific pantheons (with the exception of the Bats, which are more generic). It is only possible to have a Kindred or Devil in any given box, otherwise the Bats would take over.
