Build 6270 was released on March 25, 2007. This was the final build of the Vista Beta 2 series. It includes a number of interface and performance tweaks, including a new virtual desktop interface, Visual Voice Mail, and Windows Media Player 9. Build 6270 was not released to OEMs.
The Windows Vista Public Beta 2, or build 5728, was released to tech reporters on October 10, 2006, and to the general public on October 11, 2006. The RTM build was named Build 5832. It was released on November 8, 2006, and was available for download until February 8, 2007. The final version, Build 7600, was released to manufacturing on April 24, 2007 and to the public on May 1, 2007.
RC2 (build 6232) was released on March 11, 2007, and was available for download until March 18, 2007. The build was shipped to computers that were scheduled to receive the retail version of Windows Vista. The only difference between the RC2 and the RTM builds was that the latter included the Windows Vista Activation Server. Build 6232 was also the last version of Windows Vista to ship on a DVD-ROM. Windows Vista Retail builds would only be sold on CD-ROM drives from the initial release through April 2007.
Build 6048 (build date of February 28, 2007) was released on February 28, 2007. It was available for download until March 5, 2007. It was the first version of Windows Vista to be installed on machines to receive the retail version of Windows Vista. Build 6048 was not released to OEMs.
Build 5784 (build date of January 25, 2007) was released on January 30, 2007. It contained the final build that would be put into retail copies of Windows Vista. It was a minor upgrade over Build 5728, with the focus being on improving performance. It also included a new set of interface animations.
Build 6001 (Build date of June 23, 2007) was the first Service Pack 1 (SP1) build for Windows Vista, released in June 2007. At the same time, Microsoft also released a build known as “Windows Vista RC2”, which was an internal build of the RTM version of SP1. Both these builds were released as the same update, with the build numbers being 6001 and 6001.0X, where X is a number related to the build number of the System, SP1, SP2, or RTM.
In the month of September 2007, Microsoft rolled out a number of SP1 based features to Windows Vista. These included the addition of the Windows Aero desktop theme, new Windows Shell elements, Windows Sidebar, Windows User Account Control, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Mobile Application Pack, Windows Media Player 12, and the Windows Workspace. The next feature update, the Vista Service Pack 2, had additional features including a new search engine, a better User Account Control, a new defragmentation utility, and performance enhancements.
